"A Parent’s Guide to Building Resilience in Children and Teens”

Speaker: Dr. Ken Ginsburg

Dr. Ginsburg will address topics including:

• Developing concrete communication techniques
• Promoting resiliency in youth (ability to bounce back and cope with stress)
• Recognizing red flags that may indicate when a child/teen is at risk
• Supporting children and teens to develop positive coping strategies

Dr. Kenneth Ginsburg, MD, MS Ed, FAAP, is a nationally recognized pediatrician specializing in adolescent medicine at The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP). Dr. Ginsburg authored "A Parent's Guide to Building Resilience in Children and Teens: Giving Your Child Roots and Wings." Using humor, real-life scenarios and poignant cases, Dr. Ken Ginsburg teaches adults how to raise resilient children who can deal with stress in an increasingly complex world. His unique perspective emphasizes the developmental strengths of youth, equipping participants with skills needed to better teach kids to help themselves.

"The Power of Mindful Parenting”

"What Boys Need”

Speaker: Dr. Jerrold Shapiro
Thursday, April 22, 2010, 6-9pm

This workshop is ideal for both parents and teachers of boys. Dr. Jerry Shapiro will explore new issues for boys and offer a host of solutions to current problems. The core of the presentation is to develop more effective ways to reach our sons, while still honoring our daughter’s experiences. He will focus on what we can do to counteract the socially induced deficits as well as teach specific skills that work for boys.

Topics will include:
• how to better talk so boys will listen
• how to provide more boy-centered learning experiences
• how to avoid gender stereotyping
• how boys learn best

Jerrold Lee Shapiro, Ph.D., ABMP, CGP, is a licensed clinical psychologist in private practice since 1970. He is professor in the department of counseling psychology at Santa Clara University. He is an Advisory Board member of the Santa Clara University Family Business Forum and has been consulting with businesses (especially family- owned businesses) for 25 years. A veteran of workshops and media appearances (including Oprah, CNN, the CBS News and Morning Shows, PBS, etc.), he regularly speaks to parent groups on a variety of topics involving effective parenting.

Girls Leadership Institute - Parent/Daughter Weekend

When: Friday, May 14: Workshops, 6:00 pm - 9:00 pm; Saturday, May 15: Workshops and Lunch, 9:30 am – 5:00 pm; Sunday, May 16: Workshops, 9:30 am - 12:30 pm
Where: TheThirdPlace on the campus of Christ Episcopal Church in Los Altos, CA
Who: Daughters must be in grades six – eight.

Real Parents, Real Daughters is a unique opportunity for a weekend workshop on girls’ relationships and the best practices in communication, emotional intelligence and healthy conflict. This is not a three-day lecture! We blend our trademark sense of humor with games and activities that keep participants laughing as they learn about themselves and practice new approaches to old habits. You will not get lost in the crowd; with only 30 participants, every participant is guaranteed attention to his or her individual goals.
